Silent party (Acey)alone
Saturday my girlfriend threw a silent party. The concept is that noone's allowed to talk, but you can write messages to one another if you need to conversate. Everybody's wearing headphones with music of their own choice. I find this quite brilliant if you a have a bunch of friends who are very passionate about music because then you don't have to fight about the command over the stereo. I was at work, came late and it was rather peculiar to come at the door, knowing there was a party going on, and hear absolut silence. When I came in everybody sat in one room, listening to all kinds of music individually, drinking and writing messages to each other. The most silent noise I've ever experienced.
It got me the chance to sit down, drink a beer and enjoy the hiphop on my MP3-player which I probably wouldn't have been able to at a normal party. My girlfriends friends don't dig that shit. And it was really perfect for me cause I don't listen to anything else but hiphop (almost) at the time. That's why I'm so thrilled to experience that Aceyalone of Freestyle Fellowship will be visiting Denmark the 5th of April. The new album with RJD2 is a real partydiktator. The tour is already started and the rest of the dates are as follows:
03/28/2006 - Tue Karisruhe, Germany Radio Oriente
03/29/2006 - Wed Innsbruck, Austria PMK

The Soul of Hiphop
Why is it that all good soul comes from the hiphop artists these days? I mean Alicia Keys is ok sometimes but I would probably never buy a cd with her because her music lacks the key element: Soul. Most of the music coming out these days is just too damn well produced. I need it to sound a bit more gritty like Stewie Wonder, Curtis Mayfield and The Rance Allen Group did. That 70's warm, organic feel that makes sweat drip down your stereo rack while playing it. The neo-soul artists like D'Angelo and India.Arie just don't do the trick for me. And I haven't even wailed about the even more commercial acts like Destinys Child and Brandy. I like Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, but here's the thing: They both have a strong connection to hiphop. Lauryn Hill first and foremost play hiphop.
To prove my point I would like to draw attention to "Heaven Somewhere" with Common on the psychedelic, sprawling Electric Circus. Together with Jill Scott (maybe I should check her out), Cee-lo, Bilal, Mary J. Blige and Erykah Badu - who all are more or less connected to the neo-soul movement if one exists - they make a fantastic, 10-minutes long, psychedelic soul song that will blast you away. The hit "You got me" from Roots' Things fall apart with Erykah Badu (and co-writing by Jill Scott, whatayaknow) is also a beautiful piece of modern soul. Of course The Love Below by Andre 3000/Outkast needs to be mentioned as well as a great example of how Prince would sound like today if he had turned to hiphop.
All power to the soul of hiphop.

Psychic Ills and Telepathe from The Social Registry
I don't think that many interesting albums have been released this year. Maybe I've just grown old and grumpy, but I find it much more rewarding at the moment to buy old recordings of T-Bone Walker or Francoise Hardy. The new Liars-album is their best yet, but besides that they're hard to come by.
Two records that have impressed me in a way is "Farewell Forest" by Telepathe and "Dins" by Psychic Ills both off the Social Registry-label who had a small hit with last years Gang Gang Dance-album. The Telepathe one is only an EP, but it certainly makes promises for the future. Much in the vein of Gang Gang Dance they make hollow, hypnotic songs with ethereal singing and tribal drumming. Somewhat inspired by Cocteau Twins and A.R. Kane, but with a more psychedelic live sound. Psychic Ills are a mix between the freak folk impro of Vibracathedral Orchestra and the mantra rock of Loop and Spacemen 3. There are mp3's under the "Free Music"-tag.
